One of the fastest growing segments of auto body repair is the mobile repair and dealer services business. The driving force behind this is the demand of the car business, where people trade in their scratched and damaged cars for new ones and the dealer needs them fixed, however they aren’t going to a bricks and mortar paint shop unless they have to. The average bumper can be repaired and painted for $100 by a mobile painter in about 60-90 minutes on the spot with materials costs of about $20 and overhead costs around the same or less depending on if the business has any debt, leaving an income around $40-$60 an hour for the technician. Income for pdr and interior repair techs is similar, however pdr techs earn more than paint techs who earn more than interior repair techs and all three require a very different skillset. I personally make over $100 an hour after several years of training my clients and myself. The painters out there making that kind of money are exceptional, but as the insurance companies continue to squeeze paint shops, you’ll see incomes continue to slide. I remember paying metal techs $1000 a week in 1980. If that job went along all the other jobs out there, they’d be making about $5000 a week today.

And that is based on a thirty hour week, fifty weeks per year at the lower end of the math, I regularly make a lot more. I made $180K my last year working as a tech with myself and one employee, three days a week.

- Competition can make the pricing ridiculous (I’ve seen $35 paint jobs this year)
- There is no retirement program
- There is no margin (profits) for employees and passive income or wealth building

- If you don’t work, you go hungry
- It took me and takes the average tech six months to break even and three years to build a good business
If you can paint, you can throw your gun and a compressor in a trailer or a van, go knock on doors and in a couple of years have a nice business making six figures. But after ten years you will look back on the experience and wish you had stayed in a Body Shop because you will be the lead painter making six figures with benefits rather than the owner and employee in a smallish mobile painting company. This isn’t an opinion, interview a dozen lead painters ten years into their careers and a dozen mobile painters ten years into their business. Mathematically, the employee job beats out every time and the only reason to go on with the Mobile Business is optimism, to be your own boss, ego and the fantasy that you will do better than those other guys.
